Bands

Instrumental music at WCA is an important part of the curriculum. Students begin band instruments in the 5th grade. This class is held during the school day. Beginning Band students are taught proper playing positions and beginning techniques. They receive a strong foundation in basic music theory and are well prepared to continue in the Upper School band program. The 5th Grade Band has several performance opportunities during the year. A large percentage of the 5th graders participate in Beginning Band.

The WCA Upper School offers students 3 instrumental groups. The Concert Band is an intermediate level ensemble. Students in grades 6-8 may be part of this group. The class meets daily. Students continue to progress on their instruments and introduced to a variety of band literature. They perform in several concerts during the year.

The Symphonic Band is the most advanced instrumental group. This ensemble is open to 7th-12th grade students by audition. Historically, the WCA Band has a long tradition of excellence. They have attended music festivals and state competitions and received the highest ratings. Symphonic Band students are encouraged to take part in state events such as the District Band, All-State Band programs, and Solo and Ensemble Competition. A group of Symphonic Band volunteers make up the WCA Pep Band. This group performs at home games during the football and basketball seasons.

Our band parents have a very strong Band Booster organization. This group of dedicated parents works hard during the year to support the band program in many ways. One of the most important roles of the booster group is to raise money to sponsor several music scholarships given annually to deserving students.

In the Art Department, many exciting things are happening for the students. This year elementary had 2 Legacy calendar winners with one winning the cover and the other winning the Botanical Gardens Christmas Light contest for her billboard. It is very obvious that there is a lot of talent here at WCA both  in the middle school and high school. The entries for the Botanical Garden’s Scarecrow contest was a great success. In all high school art classes, students are now preparing paintings for the Art Auction and coming along beautifully. Art III students will be advertising soon for their Art show in the spring. Interior Design students have learned many drafting skills and are ready to begin a service project to practice those skills. We are very proud of our Art students!
