Summer Reading Grade 9

All students in 9th grade will be required to read The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Emmuska Orczy .  Honors students will also be required to read Rebecca by Daphne du  Maurier.    Rebecca contains some language and actions which a Christian would not want to emulate. As with all literature read at WCA, we will look at these books from a Christian world view.

Please do not think that you can watch the movie instead of reading the book.  Movies are notoriously different from the books.  Besides, your teacher has seen the movies and will ask questions that the movies do not cover!

Students entering grade 9--- The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Emmuska Orczy

Honors English 9------ The Scarlet Pimpernel  and  Rebecca by Daphne du  Maurier

Tests and/or essays will be given the second day of English class (first full class day). You will be evaluated through oral and written discussions of the novel, and you will not have time to do the summer reading after classes begin.

Suggestion:   Keep reading notes on  books read for summer reading. The reading notes should not be written in complete sentences and should include a list of the characters with physical and personality descriptions for each. You should know the main plot and character developments, and you should be able to describe the settings.  The notes should be in your own words and should not be copied from the internet or from any study guides for the novel. Write down  any questions you may have. These notes will be a good review for the test or essay used as evaluation of reading.

   Requirements:

     1.  List vocabulary with which you were unfamiliar and write the definition of each. This may be a rather long list. Note whether you were able to guess the meaning of the words from the context or if you needed to use a dictionary.

    2.  After reading, write down what  you feel is the author’s world-view.  Why did this person write this book?  What was he saying to the average reader of his day?  Are his views applicable to today’s culture?  Do you agree or disagree with his point of view?  This should be one paragraph.

    3.  Write a second paragraph discussing what the author is saying about appearances vs. reality.  How do misinterpretations lead to misjudging?

If you have any questions please feel free to contact your teacher:  Gwen.Seuell@aol.com.

There is no Frigate like a Book
To take us Lands away
Nor any Coursers like a Page
Of prancing Poetry --
This Traverse may the poorest take
Without oppress of Toll --
How frugal is the Chariot
That bears the Human soul.
