Text: Glencoe World Geography  (A physical and Cultural Approach) 1995

Course Objectives:

(1) To learn about physical and cultural geography in a way that prepares students to become thoughtful students in this world.

(2) To uphold Geography for Life which was established in 2000 under the educate America act (this was in response to evidence that students in the United States were not competitive internationally in the subject of geography)

(3) To understand Regions which are large areas that share ideas. We will also understand the Political, and Physical maps, different types of projections, and the use of tables, graphs, and charts.  The students will understand the customs, government, foods, clothing, economics and resources of each region in the text.

(4) To understand how humans adapt and interact with their environment.

(5) To see the world in the six key points described by Geography for Life

                A.  Seeing the world in Spatial Terms

                B.  Elements: Places and Regions

                C.  Physical Systems

                D.  Human Systems

                E.  Environment and Society

                F.  The Power of Geography

Course Description: World Geography is a one year course at WCA.  This course offered to seventh graders will cover everything from the seven continents to tracking the ministry of Christ.

 Extra Credit: I will give two 50 point extra credit assignments during each semester.

Class Behavior: It is expected that students give respectful attention to classroom learning so that all the class can benefit together. Any behavior that takes away from this will be corrected in class and the student will be warned.  If the student  still does not respond to the correction of the teacher their name will be turned into Mrs. Houston.

Students are expected to be in their desks ready to begin when the class bell rings. The class begins when the bell rings and all social conversation is to stop and students are to use the time while the teacher takes attendance for review or last-minute "cramming".

Gum and candy are not allowed in the classroom.

It is expected that students will respect the physical materials and furniture that have been provided in the classroom. There is to be no marking or carving or disfiguring of any kind on the items in the classroom.  Gum is not allowed.

Student Handbook: Students and parents need to be familiar with the student handbook especially the items that have to do with absences from class (number of days allowed, and admittance policies) and the length of time allowed for make-up work as well as the dress code.

Grading:

Test = 50 percent

Quiz = 25 percent

Homework, Project, and Daily = 25 percent

Materials Needed: There are no special materials needed. It is expected that students will come to class each day with their textbook, notebook paper and writing materials.

Computer access is necessary to get assignments and grades posted on the teacher’s web page.  As a class we will go to the computer lab to do research on the internet.  All students must have a current computer account.

Communication with Teacher: Please communicate with me via e-mail (there is a link on my web page).  I am happy to answer questions and work with students and parents in this way.  It is wise for parents to ask students about particular assignments before asking me.
