English 6 Syllabus

Welcome to your English class!  As we explore God’s gift of language together this year, it is my hope that you will gain a greater appreciation of the power, beauty, and complexity of the written and spoken word.

Classroom Expectations:

1.  Be in your seat and ready to begin when the bell rings.

2.  Bring everything you need for the class with you.  You will not be allowed to return to your locker after the bell rings.

3.  Students are expected to keep track of class handouts, papers, etc.  The teacher will not replace class handouts and materials that are lost.

4.  Show respect for your teacher, your classmates, and school property.

5.  Be prompt with all assignments.  Unexcused late work will receive a 25-pt. deduction if it is turned in by the next day of school, and a 50-pt. deduction if it is turned in by the following day.  Late work will not be accepted after that time, and the grade will be a zero.

6.  Make sure to document all sources in your written reports, etc.  You will be instructed in the proper way to do this.  Plagiarism and/or cheating will not be tolerated, and the grade for that assignment will be a zero.

7.  Bring a positive, enthusiastic attitude to class.  A positive attitude is the most important ingredient of a successful year!

Grading Policy:

Homework – 20%

Quizzes and writing assignments – 30%

Tests – 40%

Class participation/preparedness/behavior – 10%

Students will receive 5 points per class period for class participation/preparedness/behavior.  Points will be deducted for misbehavior, tardiness, late assignments, not bringing materials to class, etc.  This grade will be posted weekly.

Course Description:

The 6th grade English course consists of spelling, vocabulary, literature, and grammar studies that are designed to develop students’ reading, writing, and speaking skills.  In the area of spelling, students continue to develop writing skills as they learn additional spelling patterns.  In the area of literature, students develop vocabulary, comprehension, and interpretive skills as they study various works of literature, including short stories, poetry, and novels.  Particular emphasis is given to interpreting an author’s message according to a biblical worldview.  In the area of grammar, students continue the study of parts of speech, sentence patterns, and mechanics rules as they refine their writing skills in order to become better communicators of God’s truth.  These writing skills are refined through various writing assignments, including a book report and a short research report. Students also develop speaking skills through oral presentations and poetry recitations.
