Book Report

English 6

The Magician’s Nephew

Rough Draft Due Date: Nov. 28, 2007

Final Draft and Project Due Date:  Dec. 11, 2007

(These dates may be adjusted as deemed necessary by the teacher!)

Part 1—Written Report

First paragraph—should include important information about the book:

Title of the book (underlined or in italics)

                        Author of the book

                        Number of pages in book

Type of book (nonfiction, biography, fantasy, etc.)

Setting (where most of the story takes place)

For this book, focus on the city of London, the world of Charn,

and the magical world of Narnia.  The setting description

should be a minimum of three sentences (at least 12 words

each) with descriptive details.  You should be painting a

word picture that your reader will be able to see, so use many

                                    descriptive adjectives in these sentences.

DO NOT “write about your writing” in any part of your report.  In other

words, do not say, “My report is about The Magician’s Nephew, a book by

            C. S. Lewis.…”   Just say, “The Magician’s Nephew, by C. S. Lewis, is ….”

Beginning with the second paragraph, most of the sentences should be a

minimum of 12 words in length and should reflect effort on your part to

use descriptive words.  You must use proper sentence and paragraph-writing guidelines, and you should proofread your paper for spelling and

punctuation errors.  Of course, your paper should be neat as well.

Second paragraph—should include at least an 8-sentence summary of the

plot, including more specific information (than given in the setting)

about what actually happens in the story.  This paragraph should be                      no more than 10 sentences in length.  You should summarize, not

                        retell, the story.

Third paragraph—should be a main character development/description of

at least 8 sentences; you should include details about the character

(a physical description and at least 2 character traits, such as

bravery, impulsiveness, etc.)   If the character changed as the story progressed, explain how he or she changed.  Support your character development with examples of the character’s actions from the story, and include a quote from the character that illustrates the particular character trait you chose.

Fourth paragraph—choose a second character, and follow the same

                        directions as in paragraph 3.

Fifth paragraph—choose a third character, and follow the same directions

as in paragraphs 3 and 4.

Sixth paragraph—should include a 5 or 6-sentence description of your favorite part of the book.  This could be an explanation of your favorite scene, a favorite event, or something that you learned from the story.

Rough drafts must be handwritten in pencil and double-spaced.  Papers that are not double-spaced will not be graded!  Final drafts may be handwritten in black ink or typed in a 12 pt. non-script font.  Final drafts must be double-spaced also.  Again, papers that are not double-spaced will not be accepted!  All information should be placed neatly in a folder with a title page that includes the name of the report, your name, and a date.  All pages should be numbered in the bottom center of the page.

Remember that all work must be your own, and plagiarism is a serious offense that will result in a grade of zero!

PROOFREAD YOUR WORK BEFORE YOU TURN IT IN!

Part II—Book Report Project

Choose ONE of the following:

  1. Make a book jacket:  design a book jacket for this book.  On the front, draw a picture that you feel best captures this story.  On the back, write a well-developed paragraph that summarizes the main points of the book.  Be prepared to share in class.

  1. Make a small scrapbook or treasure box with items in it that would pertain to the story.  Include at least 6 items, each with a 3x5 card explanation of why you chose them.  Decorate your box/scrapbook.  You could use pictures, photographs or drawings that Digory and Polly might keep to document their adventures.  Be prepared to share in class.

  1. Create “paper doll” puppets (at least 3) cut into the shape of your favorite characters.  On the back of the puppets, write a description of the character and tell why you picked that character.  You might want to write a short script or get together with another student to perform a puppet show!  Be prepared to tell about what you made to the class.

  1. Make a diorama box that illustrates an important scene in the book; make it realistic—you could use paper, sand, clay, paint, fabric, etc. to help bring it to life.  On the back of the box, attach a well-developed paragraph that describes the scene in detail and tells why you chose that particular scene.
